PHOTOLUMINESCENT FIRE EXIT & SAFETY SIGNS The IBC (International Building Code) and IFC (International Fire Code) require luminous exit/egress path markings in all new and existing institutional, hotel, educational, business, public assembly and all R-1 residential buildings having occupied floors that are more than 75 feet above the lowest level of fire department vehicle access (this is generally five floor levels, or 5 stories.) Photoluminescent markings are required in exit enclosures on the steps, landings, handrails, perimeters and obstacles.
